When to apply a water repellent: temperature, weather and season
Short answer
On a clean, dry surface, in mild dry weather, with no frost in the hours that follow. The product is water-based: it needs time to penetrate and cure. Rain too soon, or a freezing night right after, and you lose the benefit of the application.
Why does the surface have to be dry?
Because a pore already full of water cannot take the treatment. A penetrating repellent works by entering the material and lining the pore walls. If water already occupies that space, the product stays on the surface and does not do what it is for.
That is why cleaning and applying are two separate operations, often days apart, and not a single day of work.
What is the weather window?
Mild, dry weather, and no frost in the hours after application. Avoid days with rain in the forecast and the cold nights of the shoulder seasons.
We do not publish a numeric cure time or rain delay, because those values depend on the substrate, the temperature and the humidity, and we do not put out a figure we cannot hold on every surface. Write to us, or ask the crew applying it: you will get the window for your surface and your forecast.
What changes region to region?
The usable season is not the same length across Quebec. In Greater Montreal or the Estrie the window is wide. In the Saguenay and the Abitibi the winter is long and freezing nights arrive early, so plan earlier and order ahead.
Spring is often a better bet than fall at equal exposure, because the temperature trend runs the right way in the days after application.
Why two coats?
Because the stated coverage, 1,000 to 1,200 sq ft per 19 L pail, is for two coats. A single coat covers more area but does not give the intended result.
Always test a small, low-visibility area before treating the whole surface, whatever the substrate.

- Yes, as long as the window is mild and dry with no frost forecast. The later the season, the rarer that window gets, especially up north.
